Our spectrum of services can be characterized by the fact that we have a system of bone saving, luxation-secure and low-abrasion prothesis available. These protheses can be adapted to the extent and nature of the disease of the hip and the individual needs of the patient.
Resurfacing (Birmingham Hip Resurfacing after McMinn, BHR)
The resurfacing is a very gentle method of joint replacement. The femoral head and neck are not removed. The femoral head is processed only to that extent that it can be "crowned" with the spherical prosthesis. The acetabulum is lined with a thin metal shell. (Fig. 1 a)
Femoral head-neck prosthesis (Birmingham Mid Head Resection after McMinn (MBHR)
Using this prosthesis a bigger portion of diseased or unsustainable bone material of the femoral head can be removed. Because the remaining part of the femoral head does not have enough capacity for the resurfacing, a titanium-carrier is inserted into the femoral head and neck fragment without cement to strengthen the femoral neck. The head is placed on the cone of that carrier. This prosthesis can also restore the biomechanics and anatomy of joints with congenital deformities. (Fig. 1b)
Metal-metal prosthesis
In osteoporosis and low levels of activity, the metal-metal prosthesis (sliding)is combined with a standard shank. The advantage is the high luxation security, which becomes increasingly important with regard to the decrease of muscle strength and coordination. (Fig. 1c)
Standard prosthesis
In case a metal-metal (sliding) is not applicable, for instance, because of a severe kidney disease, we use sliding contact with ceramic and plastic (polyethylene).
