In August 2003, the DRK Kliniken Berlin opened a Centre for Hip Resurfacing. At all three locations of the DRK Kliniken Berlin (Köpenick, West, Mitte) Prof. Faensen applies, in collaboration with the surgical and trauma clinics, especially gentle and powerful methods for the replacement of hip joints
- The hip resurfacing after McMinn, Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR)
- Femoral head-neck prosthesis after McMinn, Birmingham Mid Head Resection (BMHR)
Patients with pathological changes in joints, such as congenital and acquired deformities, arthritis, injuries, or femoral head necrosis are examined in detail at this centre and counseled with particular regard to the appropriate therapeutic procedures.
Professor Dr. Michael Faensen is a renowned European specialist in the so-named McMinn Operation Technique. "The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing" method revolutionized joint replacement surgery in the modern era. His many years of experience and over 470 operations yearly have made him an expert in this field. Hip Resurfacing is a minimal invasive approach to Hip Joint Surgery. The femur head and neck are not removed, but prepared and ""crowned" with a spherical prosthetic device. The acetabulum is then lined with a thin-walled metal cup. This method preserves the joint anatomy and biomechanics, the leg length thus rarely changes and the hip muscle leverage remains preserved. Patients benefit from this type of surgery, as healthy joint ligaments and capsule, reflex and "joint sense" remain, an advantage to the biologically young patients who actively enjoy participating in sports.
The Centre for Hip Resurfacing in the DRK Kliniken Berlin is now a training hospital for the original proceeding pursuant to Derek McMinn FRCS, the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) and is as well a reference centre in Germany.
